Happy Holidays & Happy New Year from Songsalive!

Hi everyone!

How has been your 2016? We've had a big year at Songsalive!, hosting performance showcases and song critique workshops across the globe. We've had a slew of fantastic music industry experts that have shared their knowledge at our workshops and through our Songcraft videos series online, but most importantly, we've had you, our songwriters and composers that are part of our membership and part of our community. We want to thank everyone for being involved in the songwriting community and keeping the spirit of original songs alive.

In the spirit of the holidays, we send you our best wishes and hope that you will all have creative opportunities to write and visualize your future. Next year, 2017 marks are 20th year (can you believe we started back in 1997??). We have traversed many changes in the music business, including the rise of the Internet, the demise of record retail stores, the surge of Internet music from Napster to the beginning of iTunes to now subscription models with Spotify, Pandora, and Apple Music.

Social media has exploded and is now the number one form of marketing, but at Songsalive! we knew about community since the very beginning. We pioneered community online. We created online groups, forums, collaborations before social media was in existence. We defined "community" as the most powerful network and catalyst for musicians, artists, and songwriters' success. We've watched companies come and go, festivals and conferences come and go, and yet, we have stayed strong throughout all these years as the one constant for songwriters to get support, education, promotion, and connection.

Songsalive! over the years has had chapters in many part of the world, including Australia, England, Denmark, Toronto, Canada, and all across America from Los Angeles to Chicago, San Francisco to Seattle, Nashville to Virginia Beach, New York, Long Island, and Austin, TX. We've hosted events, festivals, music conferences. We've created co-writing song camps. We've run online programs for pitching your songs through Songshop and learning video series through Songcraft and a university for you to learn and find more opportunities. We've had a robust Partner Directory/Marketplace, where you can access discounts and opportunities through our friends and industry peers. We've issued a Songwriter of the Year Award for the last five years to an esteemed songwriter each year, which is now known as an esteemed award to receive as a songwriter.

I personally have witnessed the growth and success of dozens and dozens of artists and songwriters from being unknown to international Billboard charting artists. Some of our songwriters have ended up being the #1artist in their countries, from Delta Goodrem in Australia to Lady Gaga in America and many celebrated songwriters in between. They all made their start at Songsalive!, performing one of our showcases or attending one of our song critique workshops.

You see the essence of Songsalive! is all about philanthropy. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. We are not a commercial company. We are run by volunteers. Songwriters who have given their heart and soul to support other songwriters, including myself. Twenty years I have given to songwriters without expectation or anything in return.

Our organization has survived purely off membership and educational events and small, kind donations from our music business friends, through advertising, and through program support, but all of the above cannot continue without the support of our community. The industry has changed. Times have changed. A new generation has come through, and we all have different needs. There are only a few of us who carry the backbone supporting all of you. To that end, here at Songsalive!, we are assessing...where to now?

We look to let our members know what direction we are going to take in 2017. Meanwhile, we wish you all an amazing holiday season, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, whatever you believe in, and enjoy your loved ones, your friends, and the music around you.

Best,

Gilli Moon

FROM THE HEART
New Year's Day. A fresh start. A new chapter in life waiting to be written. New questions to be asked, embraced, and loved. Answers to be discovered and then lived in this transformative year of delight and self-discovery. Today carve out a quiet interlude for yourself in which to dream, pen in hand. Only dreams give birth to change.
